How Urgent Is This?

We are all going to die. That’s for sure.

How and when. That, we don’t know.

Stories have a beginning, a middle, and an end. Our own personal story is no exception to this. So is the story of our company. One day, it will disappear.

As I think about the impact that I want to have through my business, I always keep in mind that my window of opportunity is finite, and it’s shrinking by the minute.

Why do I bring this up?

Because if we don’t think about death every day, if we don’t remind ourselves that one day, we won’t be here anymore, we’re missing a powerful reminder of why our work matters. When we don’t have that reminder, we’re wasting pages in the journal of our life and the journal of our company.

It may sound a bit dramatic, but there is nothing more real than death.

Why is it important for people to get your services, buy your product, work with you, or invest in your venture? Because there is urgency. The impact you want to have through your business is limited by time. And you don’t have a lot of time.

Every morning, I wake up and ask myself: “What am I going to do today?”

To answer this question, I read my own MetaHelm strategic narrative: to turn every company into a source of inspiration few can resist. Will I ever fully achieve this lofty goal? Likely never. But I might succeed with a few founders, CEOs, and business leaders. And that’s what matters.

That’s if there is enough urgency, of course.
