79% of business leaders believe that an organization’s purpose is central to business success, yet 68% shared that purpose is not used as a guidepost in leadership decision making processes within their organization. This is one of the findings of a 2016 study by Price Waterhouse Coopers.
Too many companies come up with a fake purpose that they fabricate to look good. This explains why nobody cares about it and why they’re not performing the way they should.
The usual understanding of organizational or business purpose is broken. It typically leads to hollow, trite purpose statements.
This doesn’t affect just large organizations. Even as mid-size organizations, startups, non-profits and independent consultants, if we let this broken understanding trickle down to our approach to individual and business purpose, our results will be just as bad.
